'The message is a world without confrontation ... We are not testing bombs. We are testing nuclear physics.' (France goes ahead with nuclear explosion on Mururoa Atoll)
Article Abstract:
France has gone ahead with an underwater nuclear explosion at Mururoa Atoll in the Pacific, despite strong objects from French Polynesia and from countries around the world. France has now undertaken 193 nuclear tests since 1960, and has broken a self-imposed three-year moratorium on testing. It claims that the testing is being undertaken in the interests of nuclear physics and of future world peace.

How Greenpeace came unstuck in the South Pacific
Article Abstract:
Greenpeace has seen its vessel 'Rainbow Warrior II,' from which it was conducting protests against planned French nuclear weapons testing at Mururoa atoll in the South Pacific, captured by three French commando crews. The vessel, along with another, 'Greenpeace,' is now under tow away from the area. France is now not likely to begin tests until the vessels are clear of Mururoa.
