Labour's offer to Sinn Fein was not naive or a gaffe
Article Abstract:
The UK Labour party has stated that there is a good chance of Sinn Fein being permitted to join inter-party talks when they resume on Jun 03 1997 if a ceasefire is called now. Critics have accused the party of taking a naive view of the Northern Ireland problem, but this approach is in fact exactly the opposite of naive. It is aware that it would not be able to solve the Northern Ireland problem quickly if it wins the forthcoming general election and that it will need to consider measures to boost the confidence of the IRA.

Peace: they're getting there ...
Article Abstract:
Prime minister John Major reacted strongly to the recent violence in Londonderry, but has made it clear that the forthcoming talks between the republicans and Michael Ancram, the Northern Ireland minister of state, will still go ahead. He has recognised that ordinary people still seek a lasting peace in Northern Ireland, and is determined that Sinn Fein will not make progress unless it behaves like a conventional political party.
