Box clever with the media
Article Abstract:
Communications company Boxclever helps charities learn how to handle journalists and how to present themselves on television. They recommend short press releases when there is information to give out, rather than waiting to be approached. Volunteer workers should be knowledgeable about their organisation and know their rights. They should develop relationships with journalists and not pressurise them. For television interviews volunteers learn to moderate their voices and portray suitable characteristics with non-verbal messages.

Giving 100 per cent for education in Africa
Article Abstract:
The Gambian Schooling Fund was established by Chris and Charmian Allwright who had no experience of fund-raising before they holidayed in the Gambia. They discovered that a year'sschooling cost 35 pounds sterling, equivalent to the cost of a restaurant meal in the UK. A typical Gambian salary is 25 pounds sterling a month. The Allwrights set up their scheme through a charity named the Sisters of St Vincent de Paul. St Augustine's School, Banjul, received 2,500 pounds sterling in the first year.

Understanding age-old problems of youth
Article Abstract:
The Trust for the Study of Adolescence aims to make prison staff and others who look after young offenders more aware of adolescent behaviour. They give courses which help staff deal with 15- to 21-year-olds who have committed offences. Normal adolescent behaviour has to be distinguished from reaction to being imprisoned. Research shows that adolescents are influenced by adults on emotional problems. Listening, being trusted and giving firm guidelines are valuable.
