Boycott's sticky wicket: 'I didn't hit her, I didn't push her, I didn't make her fall.' (former cricketer Geoffrey Boycott denies attacking former lover)
Article Abstract:
Former cricketer Geoffrey Boycott has denied allegations by former lover Margaret Moore that he physically attacked her in a hotel in France. He claims that she injured herself when she fell over while attempting to throw his clothes out of a window during an argument. Boycott created considerable confusion for French legal officials by bringing 13 witnesses to France. He failed to attend a trial in Jan 1998, and was convicted in his absence of assault. He was fined 5,000 pounds sterling and given a three-month suspended jail sentence.

French feel strain of colonial legacy: military presence reduced in Africa
Article Abstract:
France plans to reduce the number of permanent bases in Africa to five from seven, and the number of men to 6,000 from 8,100. The defense minister, Alain Richard, has stated that President Jacques Chirac supports the changes. The two bases to be shut down are in central Africa and Cameroon, and the bases to be retained are in Ivory Coast, Djibouti, Chad, Gabon and Senegal. The bases will help stabilise Africa and help French citizens, but will not arbitrate when conflicts arise, Richard has stated.
