Breast implants get the official all-clear. But does it mean they are safe?
Article Abstract:
An independent group of experts appointed by the UK government has stated that silicone gel breast implants are safe. The group found no evidence that silicone is poisonous or that it prompts abnormal immune responses. However, it did indicate that there are dangers of local effects linked with any operation to introduce a foreign material to the body. It has highlighted the problem of private cosmetic surgery clinics failing to make women aware of these local effects, which can include hardening, rupture and infection.

Poison warning to 5,000 women as breast implant banned
Article Abstract:
The UK Health Dept has issued a warning that Trilucent breast implants, which contain soya oil, could cause serious health problems. There have been cases of the implants rupturing, causing a reaction with the body and prompting it to produce biologically active substances that create swelling. The implants, produced by Swiss concern Lipomatrix, account for around one in six of the approximately 8,000 breast implant operations undertaken every year on women in the UK.

Bigger breasts could damage your health
Article Abstract:
There is continued controversy about the possible health impact of silicone implants used in breast enhancement operations. There is no clear evidence that silicone implants can cause connective tissue diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, but campaigners against implants are still convinced that they are dangerous. They believe that implants have been responsible for illnesses including memory loss and chronic fatigue.
