The great Chinese clean-up
Article Abstract:
President Bill Clinton will not see the real China on his visit there. The Chinese authorities have made considerable efforts to ensure that a positive image of the country will be presented to the world. In the industrial city of Xian, China, for example, the first stop on Clinton's itinerary, hawkers have been removed from the streets and dissidents have been sent away or are being kept under close surveillance. He will visit a Chinese village, but this has been specially selected and is not really very representative.

Have you seen the real China, Mr Clinton?
Article Abstract:
President Bill Clinton has expressed the hope that his visit to China will help to present a realistic view of the modern China to the US. However, it is in fact very difficult to assess the state of modern China. Western perceptions of China tend to focus on extremes, and there is much that goes unnoticed. Clinton's successful visit to China does not mean that the pace of political change there will now accelerate, and there will be some political fall-out from the more open approach taken by President Jiang Zemin.

'Today they bomb our embassy, tomorrow it will be our country.'
Article Abstract:
There has been a very strong reaction among ordinary Chinese to the Nato bomb attack on the Chinese embassy in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. The Chinese authorities have given approval for universities to transport large numbers of students into the centre of Peking, China, to protest outside the UK and US embassies, and ordinary residents of Peking have also joined these protests. However, Chinese leaders are aware of the need to keep nationalist sentiment under control.
