Britain's Hong Kong hypocrisy
Article Abstract:
UK policy towards Hong Kong over recent years has been characterized by uncertainty, and has been extremely unconvincing. The government has until recently expressed a firm commitment to protecting Hong Kong, but now seems to be bowing to the will of China. This has been reflected in the decision not to boycott the swearing-in of Hong Kong's provisional legislature after all. The government has decided to adopt a pragmatic approach towards policy on Hong Kong, but this appears hypocritical because it initially took a very high moral stance.

Never mind the politics, it's time to do business
Article Abstract:
The recent visit by President Bill Clinton to China can be viewed as marking the beginning of a new era in relations between the two countries. There are clearly still significant differences of opinion between them, but they have decided that they can construct a relationship which can form a key element of international relations in the 21st century. Clinton and Chinese President Jiang Zemin regard each other as a man they can do business with, and they recognize that they have mutual needs.

Hong Kong hears drumbeat quicken
Article Abstract:
There is currently little interest in Hong Kong in the UK, reflecting a growing feeling that it is now too late to make any practical difference to the colony's future as the time approaches for it to come under Chinese rule. Hong Kong still has the main elements of a colonial system of government, but it is increasingly seeing itself as independent from the UK. There are now fewer signs of British influence, and the political scene is dominated by preparations for the return to Chinese rule.
