From the melting pot
Article Abstract:
Singing in languages other than Portuguese does not really produce any problems, according to Brazilian singer Marisa Monte. She is very proud to be Brazilian, but is also aware that this can make her isolated. She believes that her main influence has been simply being Brazilian. She became familiar with samba and traditional Brazilian music at an early age, and was also exposed to international pop music. She welcomes the fact that Brazilians are very accustomed to mixing different traditions to create new styles.

Weimar vamp
Article Abstract:
The true nature of Weimar cabaret is largely unknown in modern times, according to cabaret performer Ute Lemper. She has undertaken extensive research into the tradition of Weimar cabaret, and has established that social criticism was very closely connected with everyday sexual politics. For this reason, the words of individual songs are very important to her, whatever language they are performed in. She prefers to act out a song, and feels that this does not clash with her role as a singer.

Sings like a dream, looks like Stalin
Article Abstract:
Singer-songwriter Paolo Conte is particularly attracted to the jazz of the 1920s and 1930s. In modern jazz, he prefers performers from outside the mainstream, such as Charles Mingus. He regards these people as closer to the spirit of the past. He has devoted a lot of time over recent months to producing sketches for a planned film of his play 'Razmataz,' which was published in 1990. He feels that music produces a sort of tension, while painting is relaxing.
