Britain's battle of attrition fought on a cruel sea
Article Abstract:
The Duke of Edinburgh reviews a fleet of Royal Navy and merchant vessels off Anglesey, north Wales and meets veterans with the Queen in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic, which lasted 2,073 days. Britain lost 700,000 tonnes of merchant vessels in a month. By May 1941 there had been 310,000 tons of U-boat sinkings. US aid reduced U-boat sinkings to 156,000 tonsby Oct 1941.
