Brown should not discount the Tories just yet
Article Abstract:
Some observers believe that new UK Chancellor Gordon Brown will not find it hard to introduce tax increases in the first few years of the Labour administration, as the Conservative party's election defeat was so devastating that there will be no real opposition to tax increases. However, this point of view may be misguided. It may be possible that increasing taxes immediately will cause ordinary people to lose faith in the new government. This would then make it much harder for the Labour party to win a second term.

Fiscal navel-gazing may leave Labour nest-egg
Article Abstract:
Some observers have stated that the fiscal aims of the Conservative and Labour parties are very similar, as shadow chancellor Gordon Brown has been very careful to build up a credible image of the Labour party's approach to borrowing and debt. However, the two parties' fiscal objectives in fact differ considerably. The Conservatives have put forward very tight medium-term plans, so the Labour party may be able to take a more flexible approach while still maintaining an acceptable fiscal structure.

Losing the next election should tax even Labour
Article Abstract:
The Conservative party is still very unlikely to win the next general election, even though some Labour party backbenchers have caused concern by calling for a 50p top rate of tax. The Labour party needs fewer of its own MPs than the Conservative party to form a government, as it will receive support from minor parties, the electoral system operates against the Conservatives and regional swings seem to be working in favour of the Labour party.
