'Buffets - my worst nightmare.' (dealing with an eating disorder)
Article Abstract:
The eating disorder bulimia, in which sufferers eat large amounts of food and then vomit or take laxatives, is becoming increasingly common, and now around one in 20 British women aged 17-35 is thought to have bulimic symptoms. Most receive no treatment, and most psychiatrists are not trained to deal with the problem. However, it has been shown that cognitive behaviour therapy is particularly effective. This uses behavioural techniques to deal with the immediate eating problem and cognitive therapy to treat the underlying views about the significance of weight and shape.

How to handle a beastly baby
Article Abstract:
It has traditionally been thought that mothers are responsible for almost all aspects of their baby's behaviour. However, recent research has found that the baby's behaviour can also have an effect on the mother. Babies who cry a lot are more likley to make their mothers depressed, and the problem can be made even worse if the mother feels responsible for the baby's distressed state. In the Cambridge area, health visitors are now being encouraged to train in cognitive therapy, offering counselling and practical help to help mothers with difficult babies.

Mummy, what's a sperm donor?
Article Abstract:
Most parents of donor-inseminated children choose not to tell the child about his or her origins. This is usually in order to protect the male partner, who may have mixed emotions about his infertility. However, recent research has shown that keeping the child's origins a secret may make it even harder for the father to relate to the child. It is becoming more widely accepted that it is better to tell the truth.
