Burundi in chaos after leader flees
Article Abstract:
The President of Burundi, Sylvestre Ntibantunganya, a Hutu, has taken refuge in the American Amassador's home in Bujumbura, afraid of being assassinated, and a coup d'etat is now expected, according to a western official who wishes to remain nameless. The army, comprising mainly Tutsis, could take over. On July 23 1996 enraged Tutsis, at the funeral for the 350 victims of the Hutu massacre, attempted to hang the President. The dissolution of the Convention of Government means that there is no government in the country.

Life of terror for Hutus in 'dead city.' (many ethnic killings in Burundi)
Article Abstract:
There have been many incidents of violence against Hutus in Burundi recently. In the town of Bujumbura, for example, the Hutus have been almost completely driven out, and it is no longer safe for them even to life on the surrounding hills. The streets are patrolled by Tutsi youth gangs, and there are frequent attacks on Hutus who try to return to the town to find lost possessions or sell their produce in the marketplace.

Extremists silence the moderate politicians
Article Abstract:
The army of Burundi, dominated by Tutsis who are in fact in the minority in the country as a whole, is thought to have been behind recent attacks on Hutus which have left several hundred dead. The government of Burundi has taken no action to arrest the perpetrators of these crimes, and many Rwandan Hutus, who entered the country following the civil war in their own country in 1994, are now fleeing towards Tanzania.
