Businesses play pioneering role

Head of the Turkish state-owned Emlak Bank, Sudi Apak, says that he is proud of the pioneering role he and his firm are playing in sending young managers to far off Kazakhstan. He knows profits will be small or even non-existent. Turkish banks and businesses have led the way, at least from a numbers point of view, into Azerbaijan and central Asia. Around 60 Turkish firms have set up factories or offices there and another 150 have established links to do business through.

Ancient enmities thaw during the night-train ride out of Armenia

Ordinary people in Leninaken, Armenia travel to the eastern Turkish town Kars. They think friendly relations with their neighbours are important despite the massacres. The Armenians sell Soviet-produced goods to the Turks in exchange for dollars, cheap jeans, cooking oil and sweets. Armenian President Levon Ter Petrosian's government wishes to start diplomatic relations but the final obstacle is the fight over the Armenian enclave of Nagorny Karabakh in Azerbaijan.

Independence strikes wrong notes in hungry Armenia
Article Abstract:
Many Armenians are disillusioned after economic collapse and war with Azerbaijan seriously reduced their standard of living. They used to be warm, generous and cultured, but many have taken to crime in 1992 since there is no power or gas and prices are impossibly high. The 47-year-old academic president Levon Ter Petrosian of the all-National Movement is only supported by half the people.
