CANADA: STRONG INTEREST IN SEAGRAM BRANDS
Article Abstract:
The plan by Seagram to dispose of its drinks brands as part of the company's merger with Vivendi of France in the media sector has attracted strong interested from international drinks manufacturers. The most valuable Seagram asset is said to be the contract to distribute Absolut vodka in the US. The brand's manufacturer, Vin & Sprit of Sweden, has proposed a partnership with whichever company acquires the distribution licence as part of its own expansion plans. Potential partners are Bacardi of Bermuda and Brown-Forman of the US. Meanwhile, Diageo of the UK has linked up with Pernod-Ricard of France to target spirits brands such as Captain Morgan, and Vin & Sprit could join up with them instead of Bacardi and Brown-Forman. They will face stiff competition from UK rival Allied Domecq, which is not planning to sign a partner in order to remain flexible. Final bids are due by mid-November 2000, with the deals due to be announced towards the end of December.

A drink with a poetic licence
Article Abstract:
The drink absinthe, which was brought to France from Switzerland by Henri Louis Pernod in 1797, was extremely popular among aesthetes and intellectuals for more than a century. It seems to have become popular in the UK only in the mid-19th century, when it was drunk as an aperitif at dinner and cocktail parties. Absinthe was later prohibited in France when it became clear that it was connected with insanity and with the spread of tuberculosis and epilepsy. However, it has been made in Prague, Czech Republic, by distiller Radomil Hill since 1988, and there are now plans to import it to the UK.
