UK: EARNINGS GAP NARROWS BETWEEN RICH AND POOR
Article Abstract:
The annual earnings survey showed that the divide between the richest and the poorest narrowed helped by the introduction of the minimum wage. The average gross weekly earnings of full-time staff in the UK was GB[pound] 411, a 2.3% increase on last year. The average annual salary was GB[pound] 21,842, up from GB[pound] 20,919. The earnings of the bottom 10% of workers rose 4.2% to GB[pound] 197.90 a week while the top tenth earned GB[pound] 662.20. The gender gap has also narrowed with women now earning 81.6% of the pay of their male counterparts. Men's pay increased 2.1% while women's gained 3%. Strong rises in pay in the north of England and Wales helped reduce regional pay discrepancies.

UK: CAREER MOVES BIASED TOWARDS MEN
Article Abstract:
The fact that women continue to earn less than men on average means that the man's job is considered more important to couples when considering a change of location for their career. Single women are 25% more likely to move for their career than married women, while in contrast marriage makes no difference to a man's ability to move. The job sacrifice made by women is also due to their traditional role in the family, according to a survey by Warwick University in the UK. The survey calls for pay equality between the two sexes to ensure women have the same career opportunities as men, and to avoid the situation where employers perceive women to be less flexible if they are married.

UK: WOMEN STILL DISCRIMINATED AGAINST AT WORK
Article Abstract:
UK think-tank the Industrial Society contends that male managers promote men rather than women as they still see men as the primary earners. The full-time earnings of women are still only 74% as high as those of men and only 6.5% of directors and 17% of those running departments are women.
