Cabinet of hope and hard work
Article Abstract:
A number of important decisions were made at the new UK government's first Cabinet meeting. Agreement was reached on the Queen's Speech legislative package, which will cover government activity until autumn 1998. There will be two Bills on education, along with others covering crime, health and reforms to the Bank of England. However, there will be no legislation at this stage on open government, and there could also be delays to legislation on the financing of political parties and on cigarette advertising.

The abyss
Article Abstract:
A decisive point has been reached in UK politics, according to Labour party leader Tony Blair. The Conservative government has lost its Commons majority following the decision by backbencher Sir John Gorst to no longer cooperate with the party, while prime minister John Major is in conflict with chancellor Kenneth Clarke over the European single currency. However, experience indicates that Major performs at his best when faced with a crisis.
