The US would find it very difficult to undertake effective military action against Iraq, according to a number of sources. A report from the General Accounting Office, a monitoring unit of the US Congress, indicates that most weapons systems are not nearly as effective as claimed by manufacturers and the US Department of Defence. Analyses of US military action during the Gulf War of 1991 indicate that US air strikes against small, mobile targets were largely unsuccessful.

Islamic treasure stolen

Article Abstract:

The Iraqi army reportedly plundered and damaged Islamic shrines captured from Shia Muslim rebels. Valuable jewels, gold and manuscripts have disappeared from shrines at Nagaf and Kerbala. Clergy from these shrines also disappeared. Shia Muslims claim that this is part of systematic discrimination against them. The government admitted that mosques were destroyed in clashes but accused the rebels of the theft.

Russia's plans to raise the nuclear-powered submarine 'Kursk,' in which 118 people died, are discussed. This operation is being carried out relatively quickly after the incident because President Vladimir Putin make a commitment to the victims' families that the submarine would be brought to the surface.
