Can Blair get hold of the middle classes?
Article Abstract:
The Labour party's efforts to attract upper class voters in traditional Conservative strongholds have been damaged recently by splits within the party over the suggestion by education spokesman David Blunkett that it is considering imposing VAT on private school fees. However, Tony Blair will continue with his efforts to gain support from non-Labour regions, realising that it is not enough simply to point out the shortcomings of the Conservative party. He has already spoken out strongly on issues which are of most concern to these voters, including law and order and the relationship between the Labour party and the unions.

How Blair can save billions on defence
Article Abstract:
The essential structure of the UK's armed forces has remained unchanged under successive Conservative governments, even though the defence budget has been dramatically reduced. Many observers now feel that this situation is becoming untenable. It is time to re-establish strategic priorities, a move which the UK Labour party has promised to undertake if it wins the forthcoming general election. The best approach would be greater integration of European defence industries, but it does not seem likely that the Labour party would have the courage to take such a revolutionary decision.

A million Britons will eat at McDonald's today. So why, asks Paul Vallely, has the burger chain become the focus of so much middle-class distaste?
Article Abstract:
Fast food chain McDonald's has become extremely successful, and has created many jobs across the world. However, it has become the target for many protests, mainly from environmentalists and animal welfare campaigners. It has tried to overcome its increasingly negative image, pointing out that it raises large sums of money for children's causes and that it uses a high proportion of vegetable oil.
