Woman as head of the house? Shock! Horror!

Article Abstract:

The government report 'Family Spending' shows that a minimum of 15% of households have a female head. All surveys assume the higher earner in a household is male, so advertising is geared to male concerns. In fact, many women earn more than their partner. Ten per cent of full-time female workers have high level managerial and administrative posts. The independent institute Social and Community Planning Research produced 'British Social Attitudes,' which showed that 65% of men aged 18-34 years did not believe that it is the husband's place to earn money and the wife's to look after the home and family.

The lives and deaths of Christopher Spence

Article Abstract:

Christopher Spence, 49, is director of London Lighthouse, a centre for people with Aids, used by 1,500 people a week. Sixty per cent are gay, 15% are women. They appreciate the chance Aids gives them to value life and time. Spence told his parents he was homosexual when he was 21. It was the reason he did not pursue his training for priesthood. He lived with his partner for 23 years, but when the relationship ended, he married. Spence was director of Task Force, ran Selwyn Lloyd's private office and established Lifestory. He believes society's denial of death hinders social change.
