It is quite easy to imagine that it will be possible to develop mobile telephones capable of operating anywhere in the world. However, it is hard to foresee the social consequences of this technology. It is likely that most people in the developed world will have an account with one of around six large service providers. These companies will offer a range of value-added services, some of which will be high-tech and others low-tech. The telephone will become a focal point for buying and selling services, some of which will come from abroad.
