Car insurance to cost more
Article Abstract:
A test court ruling in favour of three car accident victims is likely to put more pressure on car insurance companies to raise premiums. The ruling by the House of Lords awarded the victims a higher compensation payment than originally agreed by the insurers. Compensation payments from insurers are usually aimed at giving the claimant an annual return of 3-4% above inflation if invested in equities. However, the House of Lords decided that the payment should be invested in index-linked gilts, which offer less risk but have a lower return. Higher premiums of up to 7.5% are expected as a result, although the AA predicts a rise of 4-5% for fully-comprehensive cover and 3% for non-comprehensive cover.

UK: MOTORISED SCOOTERS REQUIRE INSURANCE
Article Abstract:
The High Court has ruled that drivers of motorised scooters must wear helmets, hold valid driving licences and third party insurance, and pay tax. The judges ruled that the vehicles were intended for use on the roads and were subject to road traffic laws. The judgement effectively bans them from public pavements and streets, as it will be impossible to get insurance for them. The ruling means Secretary of State for Transport will have to decide whether the vehicles are motorbikes or mopeds.
