Caught in a net of their own making
Article Abstract:
Half the fish eaten in the UK is cod, haddock and plaice and in October 1992 British fishermen were suddenly told they could not catch any more. Over fishing had led to the danger of fish stocks being permanently destroyed so a quota system was necessary. Fishermen have also created problems for themselves, one way being that they all tend to put to sea at the same time, say on a Monday, and consequently they all come back at the end of the week with large catches, resulting in low prices. No attempt is made to spread the landing of catches over the week. By the time a piece of fish reaches the consumer it costs about six times the quayside price.

Hiking into history
Article Abstract:
On April 24, 1942 Benny Rothman led a large party of walkers onto some privately owned land in the Peak District, the day ending with Benny and five others being arrested and subsequently going to jail. He served four months in Leicester Gaol after being convicted of riotous assemble and incitement offences. His jailing had a profound effect on public opinion and was the start of numerous changes to the law which has led to the establishment of facilities. The 1949 National Parks and Access to Countryside Act led to footpath preservation and the 10 national parks now in existence.
