Cecil James
Article Abstract:
Bassoonist Cecil James studied at the Royal College of Music before becoming second bassoon to Paul Draper with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1933. He served with the Royal Air Force Central Band during the second world war, and in 1951 became principal bassoon of Walter Legge's Philharmonia orchestra. He was later to become first chairman of this orchestra. He played on a number of classic recordings, including Stravinsky's 'Sacre de printemps' under Igor Markevitch.
