Chance of a lifetime
Article Abstract:
Rose Tremain is an author who has published eight novels, two of which, 'Restoration' and "Musical and Silence' are historical novels. She had to read 50 novels for the Betty Trask Award and found 20 to be identical with accounts of drug abuse, sharing apartments, first love and anorexia. She argues that Readers should be both surprised and feel recognition when the read novels. She was a teacher of creative writing at the University of East Anglia, England, from 1988 to 1995, and argues that people can be taught to learn their strengths and weaknesses, though they cannot be taught to write.

The birth of a notion
Article Abstract:
Claudio Monteverdi's opera 'La Favola d'Orfeo,' first performed at the carnival in Mantua, Italy, in Feb 1607, is the earliest opera still in production. There were many problems associated with the first production of this opera, including the poor health of Monteverdi's wife, the court singer Claudia Cattaneo, and the delay in the arrival of one of the Grand Duke of Tuscany's castrati to sing the role of La Musica. The first production had a different ending from the version now performed.
