Charles Wintour
Article Abstract:
Journalist Charles Wintour was attracted to journalism from an early age. He graduated from Peterhouse, Cambridge, England, in 1939 with first class honours in English and History. He was commissioned in the Royal Norfolk Regiment when the second world war broke out. He was employed as a leader writer on the Evening Standard in 1946, and his career progressed rapidly. He became editor of the Evening Standard in 1959. He retained this post until 1976, and returned to it from 1978 to 1980. He was a member of the Press Council from 1979 to 1981.

American Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour has gained a strong reputation for the extremely high quality of her work. She has made the magazine more aggressive and more commercial, and can often appear ruthless and intimidating. Some observers believe that she will now face competition from Kate Betts, her former assistant at Vogue, who has become editor of Harper's Bazaar. Like Wintour, Betts is known to be extremely determined.
