Chechens launch offensive on Grozny
Article Abstract:
Chechen rebels have become increasingly concerned about the behaviour of the Russian government in Chechnya since president Boris Yeltsin was re-elected in Jul 1996. This is reflected in increasing violence there, with rebels attacking Grozny, the capital, and two other towns. There now seems little hope for the peace process. The problems in Chechnya are placing a burden on Boris Yeltsin, whose health is poor, at a time when he also has other serious difficulties to address.

Rebel lord of Grozny revels in his triumph
Article Abstract:
The Russians would lose many troops if they were to attempt to recapture the town of Grozny, according to guerrilla leader Shamil Basayev. His forces currently control most of the town, having established a headquarters in every district. Basayev is highly respected in Chechnya, and his troops remain strongly loyal to him. He is sceptical about efforts by the Russian government to end the conflict.

Lull in Grozny, and silence in Moscow
Article Abstract:
A ceasefire is currently in operation in Grozny, Chechnya, but most observers agree that this will only be temporary. There has been no official comment from the Russian government on the truce deal brokered by Alexander Lebed, president Boris Yeltsin's envoy, with Chechen separatist rebels. There is a growing feeling the Russian policy on Chechnya is uncoordinated and on the point of collapse.
