China reformers set to crush old guard
Article Abstract:
China is the only communist country left except Cuba and a few East Asian states. Peking is the venue for 1,991 delegates at the 14th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party. It will be told to relinquish more power through economic reform and to change personnel. China is the 10th largest exporter in the world. The party's authority was badly damaged by the Tiananmen massacre. Leader Mr Deng intends to bring prosperity to the 1.2 billion Chinese in order to survive the collapse of Communism in other countries.

'I would love to put each and every one of you in my pockets and return with you to South Africa'
Article Abstract:
Thousands of people went to see President Nelson Mandela of South Africa in Brixton and Trafalgar Square, London, on July 12 1996. In Brixton, people clapped and blew whistles and sang, and tried to touch him. Some women wept. At the recreation centre Mandela spoke of London and the UK being the centre of the fight against apartheid. When he left the building his walkabout had to be curtailed because people climbed over security barriers. In Trafalgar Square, the crowd was just as excited.
