Italy invites former Communist to govern
Article Abstract:
Opposition parties in Italy have protested strongly at the possibility that former Communist Massimo D'Alema could become the country's next Prime Minister. They regard his appointment as undemocratic. D'Alema himself has stated that he intends to check whether he would be able to rely on a majority in parliament. A left-wing government under D'Alema would incorporate a wide range of political opinion, including the centrist Unione Democratica per la Repubblica and one or both of the two small hard-line Communist groups.
