Chinese leadership admits mistakes
Article Abstract:
The Chinese government has made some errors of judgement in dealing with the country's economy, according to a rare admission from prime minister Li Peng. The government has called on delegates to the National People's Congress to focus on the concerns of the people, and seems to be taking steps to maintain social stability in preparation for the death of Deng Xiaoping. The prime minister has also acknowledged that there are widespread difficulties with corruption, which is one of the main concerns of ordinary people.

Chinese try to buy off the protests
Article Abstract:
There is no official memorial to those people who were killed in the Tiananmen Square massacre in Bejing, China, in 1989. Families of the victims are seeking to take legal action over the deaths, and this has meant house arrest for the mother of one victim. Corruption is still a problem in 1999, and there is also concern about unemployment. Labor rights campaigners are on trial in 1999, and social gatherings are seen as threatening for social stability by the government.

Comrades praise 'great Marxist' but it's business as usual for the Chinese
Article Abstract:
The hour-long memorial ceremony for Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping was broadcast extensively across the country. Some people clearly showed grief, but many carried on as normal, not stopping even for the official three-minute silence. The ceremony was attended by 10,000 senior party and government officials, and president Jiang Zemin spoke of Deng Xiaoping as 'a great Marxist.' He promised to continue the reform policies of Deng Xiaoping.
