Labour finally begins to choose its enemies
Article Abstract:
The UK Labour party has until recently been very careful to gain and retain the support of its former enemies in the media and in business. However, the recent statement by Robin Cook that he would favour UK entry into the single European currency in 2002 if it was successful represents a shift away from this approach. This is the first significant policy difference between the Labour and the Conservative parties. Labour has now made a commitment to a key policy which is opposed by most of the Conservative establishment from which it has been trying to gain support.

Major got it right, but nobody's listening
Article Abstract:
Prime minister John Major has for some time been the subject of criticism for his unwillingness to commit himself on the issue of the single European currency. However, recent developments have in fact made his stance seem quite sensible. It is becoming clear that it is necessary to be very cautious about monetary union, and the fact that John Major has been expressing this view for so long will be to his advantage in the run-up to the next general election.

Single currency, double-speak
Article Abstract:
The government has been giving mixed signals recently about its attitude to European Monetary Union, but it must soon make very serious decisions about whether the UK will join a single European currency. The current official line is that this decision will depend on what sort of single currency is being proposed, but this lack of commitment means that the UK will not be able to play a role in influencing the shape of any monetary union which may develop.
