Jacques Chirac, the new president of France, has promised that his presidency will be dynamic, allowing the country to enter the 21st century. At his investiture, he pledged to restore the values and constitutional principles of Charles de Gaulle. Francois Mitterrand, who served as president of France for 14 years, has now taken his leave of French political life, and his farewell speech caused considerable emotion among the crowd which gathered to see him depart.

Hopeful Jacques plays the youth card
