President Bill Clinton's forthcoming visit to Gaza, Gaza Strip, where he will address members of the Palestinian National Council, will be widely seen as bringing the US close to de facto recognition of a Palestinian state. However, most of the 1 million Palestinians in Gaza are cynical about Clinton's visit. They point out that the economy in Gaza and the West Bank is very weak and that they are still under very strong pressure from the Israelis.

The anti-Taliban group, made up of Iran, Russia, India and other countries opposed to the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, has met to consider the role of their alliance as the US considers retaliation for terrorist attacks in Washington, DC, and New York, NY. These countries have little common ground apart from their opposition to the Taliban.

The 300 Taliban prisoners of war being held in Barak Prison in Afghanistan's Panjshir Valley, a stronghold of the Northern Alliance, have welcomed the attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon. The 19 Pakistanis among the prisoners seem to play a leading role.
