Asda to sell cut-price designer sunglasses
Article Abstract:
Asda will sell Versace sunglasses at GB 50 per pair, rather than the GB 163 price recommended by the luxury goods group, from 20 July 1998. The UK-based supermarket group will offer the range in 83 outlets in a move which goes against efforts by European regulators to clamp down on the sale of cheap designer products. Earlier in July 1998, the European court ruled that the sale of cheap products acquired outside the European Union was illegal, but Asda stressed that it had used a European source for its Versace products.

Supermarkets make formal OFT
Article Abstract:
Major UK supermarkets have reacted angrily to the latest anti-supermarket report from the Office of Fair Trading. Safeway and Tesco have both contacted John Bridgeman, the Director General of Fair Trading, to make a formal complaint at the way the report, which examined retailers' buying power, was presented as an official OFT study when in fact it was an academic paper. It is understood that the OFT has now issued a disclaimer against the views expressed in the paper.
