Communism is alive and well and living in Nanjie
Article Abstract:
The 3,130 citizens of the village of Nanjie in central Henan Province, China, have decided that they do not wish to participate in the shift towards capitalism taking place in the rest of China. They have recollectivized the village's farmland and removed village industries from private control. Everybody receives 14 free benefits, including education, electricity, housing and health care. There is a 10-star good behaviour system, and privileges are reduced if families go against this system in any way. It seems that local people are prepared to tolerate political indoctrination if this means that they are assured good quality housing, food and education.

China divorce is too close for comfort
Article Abstract:
Marriage in China brings the right to a state-owned apartment from the work unit, but if the couple divorces they cannot find alternative accommodation. People usually live with their parents until they marry, so there are scarcely any single-person units. There were about 900,000 divorces in China's courts in 1992, plus a similar number agreed out of court. This is four times as many as in 1982. Divorces because of loss of affection are most prevalent among those married three-five years.
