When Neil Kinnock relinquishes his role of Opposition Leader on Jul 18 1992, he is entitled to sit on the Commons back benches, but his colleagues feel that would be awkward. He has not held ministerial office and is only 50, so he is able to serve in another role. One opportunity is to become a Member of the European Parliament, as Llewellyn Smith, MEP for South East Wales, which includes Mr Kinnock's constituency of Islwyn, has succeded Mr Foot in the Commons. Another possibility is to become one of the two British commissioners at the EC.
