Companies keen to switch
Article Abstract:
Pharmaceutical companies apply for permission to market drugs over the chemist's counter before their patent ends, so maintaining sales when competitors appear. The government is likely to encourage this as it wishes to reduce healthcare bills. The Committee on Safety of Medicines requires drugs to have a good safety profile, established while being prescribed, and not to cause serious harm if the dosage is exceeded, before permission is granted.

Schemes to win back private shareholders
Article Abstract:
Insurance and pension companies have their own investment trust managers in the 1990's. Many large institutional holdings have been sold, so trust managers seek private investors. From 1989-1993 these increased from 10 to 35%. Savings schemes, which reduce risks and are easier to buy as no stockbroker is needed, have been established. Investment trust shares can also be put into a Personal Equity Plan. Investors should check the charges.
