Conscript tells of Algeria's torture chambers
Article Abstract:
Soldiers in the Algerian army have been guilty of committing horrific acts of torture on innocent people, according to Reda, who was a conscript in the army before seeking asylum in the UK. Conscripts are injected with drugs to make them aggressive, and are encouraged to regard people wearing Islamic clothes as terrorists. He believes that regular soldiers were responsible for the massacre of civilians in the village of Sidi Moussa on May 27, 1997. He was forced to flee the country after death threats were made against him and his family.

Algeria terror touches the world
Article Abstract:
The US has called for an international inquiry by non-governmental organizations into massacres of civilians in Algeria by forces opposed to the country's military-backed government. Its condemnation of the atrocities has been echoed by Europe. However, it seems likely that the Algerian government will continue to reject any form of outside involvement. Furthermore, it will remain unable to protect innocent civilians from attacks by armed militias.
