Conservation: the last straw
Article Abstract:
A council report to be published in Nov 1994 states that the new thatch roof of a listed cottage in Stoke Abbott, Dorset, England, called 'Mins, destroys its traditional appearance. It is thatched with water reed which has a longer life than the combed wheat reed that is traditionally used in Dorset to produce the soft, rounded shape. Dorset has 2,443 listed thatched buildings and a further 2,000 unlisted. Combed wheat straw is difficult to obtain as farmers may only use its by-product as chicken feed. It must be laid in two coats, adding a week to a re-roofing.

Village hall's 24,000% rent rise stirs revolt
Article Abstract:
The village hall at Bentworth, near Alton, Hampshire, England has had an annual rent of five shillings since 1964. When the lease runs out in Oct 1992, local lawyers, surveyors, the Charities Commission and the Church intend to offer a new 20-year lease with an annual rent of 6,000 pounds sterling. The hall is used by many local clubs, who cannot afford the increase. The Charities Commission requires all charities to obtain the best income possible from their possessions.
