Consumer activism is a sign of political impotence
Article Abstract:
There are high levels of political apathy and social disengagement in the UK. However, consumer activism continues to increase. This trend is seen particularly in the workplace, with employees being no longer prepared to tolerate unacceptable working conditions. Many ordinary people are suspicious about politicians and political institutions, and this is reflected in very low voting levels at elections. Society now seems to celebrate the litigant and the complainer, indicating that the reciprocal nature of democratic politics has little to offer ordinary people.

Students and drink: have the Puritans taken over the bar?
Article Abstract:
There have been a number of initiatives over recent years designed to warn students at UK universities and colleges about the dangers of drinking excessive amounts of alcohol. Some observers have reservations about anti-alcohol campaigns aimed at students, feeling that they tend to treat students as children. Placing too much emphasis on the dangers of alcohol creates a climate in which students are discouraged from experimentation. Learning to drink sensibly is a vital process in helping students to learn about themselves and their strengths and weaknesses.
