Upholstered furniture enjoys a household penetration of more than 80%, the second highest overall in the furniture market after beds in the UK. Although AB consumers have the highest ownership of upholstered furniture at 90%, other socio-economic groups are not far behind at more than 70%. Upholstered furniture is given more attention than other living room furniture by most households despite the considerable money required for such purchases. Wealthy, older customers prefer long-lasting upholstered furniture, while younger customers go for more modern designs and different colors.

The UK market for upholstered furniture greatly relies on consumers' disposable income levels. However, the economic recession in the 1990s brought about by the collapse of the housing market momentarily set back upholstered furniture industry. But the furniture market is enjoying brisk business because of social trend and changing lifestyles over the last two decades. Demand for furniture, especially upholstered furniture, is growing as divorce rate increases, more younger people prefer to live away from their parents before marriage, and a number of older people live alone.

Leather furniture is catching up with fabric in UK's upholstered furniture market, increasing its share to around 40% in 1998 compared to just 26% of sales value in 1994. Aside from being more affordable, leather is easier to clean and more durable and offers wide range of colors and finishes, including antique finishes, two-tome colors, printed and textured leathers. The leather sector managed to achieve considerable success despite issues hounding it such as misinformation and the use of poor quality leather.
