Councils told to sell off pools
Article Abstract:
The Treasury wants the UK's local authorities to meet spending objectives drawn up by Chancellor, Gordon Brown, by disposing of assets including leisure centres, swimming centres and offices, it emerged on 6 July 1998. Mr Brown will be informed by the Association of Local Government that annual sales of GB 2.75bn can be achieved, amid the belief that GB 2.5bn can be generated primarily from housing being transferred to housing associations during 1998-1999 across England. However, the Labour-controlled association wants rules governing spending by town halls to be abolished by the Treasury, enabling them to retain all the money generated from privatisation. There may also be concern over plans to dispose of assets considered precious.
