'Crash' tackling
Article Abstract:
Many lawyers in the UK are concerned about the close relationship between home secretary Michael Howard and James Ferman, director of the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). They feel that the government is deliberately putting increasing pressure on the BBFC, and that more and more films will now be censored. The government seems to be using sex and violence in films as an explanation for many social problems, and is guilty of interfering in the work of the BBFC for political motives. Lawyers believe that there is now no clear line between the independence of the BBFC and government censorship.

Give us this day our vitamin A
Article Abstract:
Many people now take vitamin pills to supplement their diet, but medical opinion is still divided about whether vitamin supplements are of any use. In the UK, the official government advice is that vitamin supplements are not necessary for people eating a balanced diet, and people are being warned against supplementation with concentrated or purified preparations. Despite this, the market continues to expand rapidly, and critics claim that this is because manufacturers are successfully preying on people's fears.

Courting computers
Article Abstract:
Mixed views are currently being expressed about the use of latest information technology within the UK legal system. Computers certainly have the potential to allow courts around the country to work together more effectively, but some observers are concerned about the fact that private companies seem to be dominating information technology strategy in this area. There is particular concern about Electronic Data Systems, which has won a 25 million pounds sterling contract to computerize county and crown courts.
