Creating a social superhighway
Article Abstract:
The Labour party is currently addressing the issue of how latest information technology developments can be used to the best advantage of ordinary people. It is vital to establish new networks of fibre-optic cable and radio links covering the whole of the country if maximum benefit is to be derived from the opportunities offered by new technology. The main role of government should be to establish the competitive framework within which this infrastructure can be established.

Widening the Net
Article Abstract:
It is likely that information technology (IT) will become an increasingly common feature of homes in the UK. Already, 5 million Britons can access the Internet, and this is set to rise to more than 8 million in 1999. An IT experiment in Islington, London, England, entitled MSN Street, has involved installing on-line facilities in 23 houses in the same street. It has been found that the use of IT has greatly boosted communications between the participants.
