William Scott: a life study
Article Abstract:
The work of abstract artist William Scott very closely reflects his personality. Right from his early work, undertaken at the Royal Academy Schools in the early 1930s, he was determined to avoid all inessential detail. His works have a strange esoteric quality and chart a clear progress towards abstraction. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, his abstraction became more minimalist and austere, and this was followed by a softer return to the still life theme.

Tying the century together
Article Abstract:
The Tate Gallery Liverpool in Liverpool, England, and the Marlborough Gallery in London, England, are both staging exhibitions of work by Victor Pasmore, who died in 1998 at the age of 90. The exhibition in Liverpool has taken care to show Pasmore's progression, ending with 'Space, Light and Four Dimensions' of 1992 to 1995. The Marlborough Gallery exhibition contains several late works that show Pasmore shifting towards an uncertain form of figuration.

An A to Zebra of Lucian Freud
Article Abstract:
The Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh, Scotland, is currently holding an exhibition of the early paintings and drawings of Lucian Freud. These begin in 1937, when Freud was 14, and run to 1945. The exhibition is extremely interesting in tracing Freud's origins as a painter, and all of the works are significant. They show very clearly how Freud learned by looking and observing, rather than attending formal art classes.
