Crop trade wars and the maize of confusion: legal battles loom over genetically engineered produce
Article Abstract:
The decision by the European Commission to insist that all genetically engineered foods must be clearly labelled will have a significant impact on the economics of genetically altered crops. It could even mean that genetically engineered foods are no longer sold in Europe. The European Commission is also recommending that genetically engineered crops should be grown in segregated fields and then transported, stored and shipped separately. This will have important repercussions in the US, which produces large amounts of soya, the only modified crop which is currently being shipped in bulk.

It should have been the mother of all free music festivals - and one in the eye for the hated Criminal Justice Act. But things soon started to go wrong
Article Abstract:
A week-long party starting on Jul 07, 1995, to protest against the Criminal Justice Act, which makes unlicensed free parties and festivals illegal, had been planned for some time. Under the act, police have the power to exclude anyone within a five-mile radius who is suspected of trying to attend a party, and party-goers can be fined 1,000 pounds sterling. Organisers were determined to prove that the Act is ineffective. However, no large party ever materialised, as the police were determined to ensure that it did not happen. Instead, a number of smaller impromptu events took place.
