Article Abstract:

The issue of whether Northern Ireland needs a truth commission was discussed in Sep 1998 at a meeting at Oxford University, England, organized by the Catholic Institute for International Relations and the Uppsala Peace Institute. It has been found in other countries, such as Guatemala, that the memories sparked off by a truth commission can be an empowering process. Discussing what happened during an era of civil conflict can also help with the reintegration of informers and collaborators into society. However, a truth commission can also uncover unpleasant facts and bring about splits in individual relationships.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Paul Condon has emphasized that his officers will continue to seek those responsible for the racist murder of black teenager Stephen Lawrence in Apr 1993. He has expressed shame at the way in which the Metropolitan Police failed Lawrence's family, but does not feel that he should resign. He believes he has a duty to remain in his job and continue to battle against racism within the Metropolitan Police and in society as a whole.
