Delusions of grandeur
Article Abstract:
The exhibition entitled 'Beyond Reason: Art and Psychosis' which is currently being held at the Hayward Gallery in London, England, is based around some 200 works from a collection of more than 5,000 paintings, drawings and other objects put together by Hans Prinzhorn. He was assistant director of the psychiatric clinic of Heidelberg University in the early 20th century, and was very interested in studying the art of people suffering from severe mental disturbance. The exhibition has a slight atmosphere of voyeurism, and must of the material is tinged with pathos, as many of the artists were later murdered by the Nazis.

Love's labours lost
Article Abstract:
An exhibition called 'Amours' at the Fondation Cartier, Paris, France, focuses on love and desire, and has been organized by Herve Chandes. Chandes argues that 'Amours' celebrates lovers and love, but this is not the case. There is a lack of coherence to the exhibition with works placed arbitrarily together. Different types of love are depicted, including a Cartier Bresson photo showing two girls together, and Mapplethorpe's 'Charles and Jim'. Yet Picasso's 'The Kiss' shows that love can be unsociable and savage.

The name of progress
Article Abstract:
The Tate Gallery in London, England, is holding an exhibition of the work of 18th century artist and engraver William Hogarth. His engravings deal mainly with very low subjects, but his real aim was to be recognised as a history painter. He had a long-standing desire to create something to rival Sir James Thornhill's very large painting on the ceiling of Greenwich Naval Hospital, but it is clear that he was temperamentally unable to paint serious narrative works.
