Despair and death on an estate without hope
Article Abstract:
Edna Phillips, 70, was murdered at home on the Penywaun council estate of 800 houses in Aberdare, South Wales, after years of terrorisation by local residents. In 1987 she had asked to be rehoused. The neighbouring Rossi family hated her because she complained about their noisy parties to the police. They stoned her and hurt her dog. She wrote to her MP (Member of Parliament,) Ann Clwyd, who involved the police. In July 1992 Maria Rossi, 17 and Christina Molly, 17, strangled and tortured Miss Phillips. Unemployment, burglary and violence are common in the area.

Schoolchildren's adventure at sea that turned into a nightmare
Article Abstract:
Three schoolchildren have died in a canoeing disaster after setting out from Lyme Regis, Dorset, UK to canoe the two miles down the coast to Charmouth. They were driven out to sea by the offshore wind blowing through the Charmouth Gap where the river Char reaches the sea. The high cliffs protect the rest of the shallow area. Concern has been expressed over the delay before any rescue was launched, approximately three hous after the canoes were overturned by the rough incoming tide.
