Discount grocers battle for trade
Article Abstract:
There has been a rise in the number of discount supermarkets as well as in new superstores from the leading firms. Discount supermarkets aim at increased sales and lower margins on a limited range of stock. Deliberately down market they are often sited near council estates. The biggest of the 10 is Kwik Save, with more stores than Sainsburys and Tesco together and still continuing to open more stores. Meanwhile the top end of the market, attracting shoppers with out of town superstores with parking and wider ranges of products, are really threatened heavily by the discounters.

A small bonus for democracy
Article Abstract:
John Lewis is Britain's largest workers' co-operative and demonstrates successful industrial democracy. Its philosophy of steady organic growth has provided an annual bonus in double digits for 20 years, but in 1992 the recession, staff and pay increases mean 10% more profit is necessary to maintain the bonus. A London School of Economics study shows that demographics and demand for better service will lead all retailers to follow John Lewis's employment principles.
