Dismayed, by a big majority
Article Abstract:
The UK's main political parties have given little attention to science as they have campaigned in the run-up to the forthcoming general election. For this reason, most scientists do not believe that the problems which they currently encounter in their work will be resolved by the new government. They expect to have to continue to battle against reduced funding, strong competition for grants, short-term contracts and the undervaluing of their work. They are particularly concerned that the science research base is not receiving sufficient funding to guarantee future international competitiveness.

Engaging with the future
Article Abstract:
A future Labour government in the UK would give high priority to improving standards of science teaching in schools, even at primary level, according to shadow Minister of Science Adam Ingram. Science and related issues would be represented at Cabinet level in a future Labour administration by the Chief Scientific Adviser, who would be independent of individual departments. A Labour government would encourage industry to invest in areas which will have a directly positive impact on the science and technology base.
